If you’re a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you may be wondering, “Can I sponsor my sibling for permanent residence?” You’re not alone—we’re often asked by Canadians if they can sponsor a brother or sister. While it’s a common question, the answer is more complex than most expect.
In Canada, the rules around Canadian sponsorship for siblings are extremely limited, and only a small number of people actually qualify. Still, there are important exceptions and several alternative immigration pathways that siblings can explore. Sponsoring a Sibling to Canada
Generally, there is no dedicated permanent-residence sponsorship category for brothers or sisters. However, under very limited and specific circumstances, sibling sponsorship may be feasible:
- Dependent on a parent’s application. If your sibling is 21 years old or younger, and you are sponsoring your parent(s) for permanent residence, your sibling may be included in that application as a dependent—provided all other dependency criteria are met. Sponsoring a parent is itself challenging: demand far exceeds available sponsorship spots, and there are stringent eligibility requirements.
- Orphaned sibling. If your sibling is under 18 years of age and both of their parents are deceased, you may be eligible to sponsor them as an orphaned relative, assuming you meet the other standard requirements for sponsorship.
- “Lonely Canadian” exception. In rare cases, if you have no other immediate relatives (for example, no spouse, child, parent, or grandparent whom you can sponsor), you may sponsor one family member, which could be your sibling. To qualify, the sibling must be related by blood or adoption, and you must satisfy the usual sponsorship obligations (such as financial support).
What If I Can’t Sponsor My Sibling Directly?
If direct sponsorship is not possible, you may still assist your sibling in obtaining permanent residence through other means:
- Express Entry. Having a sibling in Canada who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident can boost their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score by 15 points.
- Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs). Certain PNPs offer additional points or favourable streams for candidates who have a sibling living in the province as a citizen or PR.
- Indirect support. You may help your sibling by facilitating an employment offer from a Canadian employer, assisting them in financing their studies in Canada, or otherwise supporting their long-term plan to immigrate.
Canadian Sponsorship Processing Time
While IRCC publishes processing times for many sponsorship applications, sibling sponsorship is so rare that there’s no set standard “sibling sponsorship processing time.” Because fewer applications are made for siblings, and each case tends to be unique, timelines can vary.
